The school days for the 2016-2017 year are dwindling down to the single digits as students are on the verge of summer holidays.

The last couple weeks of the school year can be a stressful time for students as they are focused on final exams and projects to cap off their semester. Wednesday night at Kindersley Composite School (KCS) offered students, teachers, and parents a chance to take a breather and enjoy a night of music and socializing.

KCS hosted the ever-popular Strawberry Social in the school's gymnasium featuring band students from grades 8 to 12.

The grade 9-12 band takes centre stage.

Elizabeth Middle School students kicked off the evening with a few songs including a cover of the theme song from The Simpsons. Band teacher and conductor Colleen Oscar-Swan gave an introduction to each piece and background information of how the year went for the band.

Intermission offered the audience a chance to relax with refreshments and strawberry angel food cake for dessert in the school's lobby and commons area. Once everyone had their fill with cake and drinks, it was time for the high school band to play their last concert of the year.

The grade 9-12 band explored through an exciting setlist of thrilling pieces during the second half of the event. Different work was showcased from the high school instrumentalists, drawing from various genres of music. Everything from a group of students performing a Japanese drum ensemble, to the full band putting their own spin on Ozzy Osbourne's "Crazy Train" were on display at KCS that night.

The high school performance was an emotional segment in the show for everyone involved too. Oscar-Swan took the opportunity to share her highlights from the school year with the audience and wish the graduating students all the best in their next chapter in life.

Gifts were exchanged, laughs were had, and the evening left people in a delightful mood as they exited the building. A fantastic way to end what was a marvelous year of music for a talented group of young adults.

The high school band students brought out the washboards and cans for a southern feel on one of their compositions.

Guest conductor Helen Barclay and students wowed the crowd with a Japanese drum ensemble.
