Local bowlers Eric Serfas, Michael MacDiarmid, Roland Ricard, Kendell Graham, and Reece Ricard, recently travelled to Toronto over the weekend to the 2019 Bowl Canada Cup to compete for the national championship. The men are apart of a five-pin bowling team called The Hurricanes.

Earlier this year, Kindersley held a regional qualifying rounds which the men won to move onto Provincials in Saskatoon. There the men had to beat nineteen teams to ultimately take the provincial championship and there they were given the opportunity to represent Team Saskatchewan at the 2019 Bowl Canada Cup.

This year, the Bowl Canada Cup took place in Toronto at Parkway Bowl on July 6th and 7th. The competition is for adult league bowlers across Canada. At the competition were eight teams: Saskatchewan, British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, Newfoundland, Quebec, Northern Ontario, and Southern Ontario.

The Hurricanes played ten games in the qualification rounds and took away nine wins ultimately finishing first with a 13,765 score. Behind Saskatchewan by 126 points was Southern Ontario who placed second in the qualification rounds. Manitoba had a score of 13,472, which put them in the Wildcard Qualifier spot to take on Southern Ontario for the chance to meet Saskatchewan in the finals.

Southern Ontario ended the game with a score of 1,262 which was just 40 points short of Manitoba’s score of 1,302. The wildcard qualifiers moved on to face the top divisional qualifier in the final game.

Saskatchewan took away a score of 1,328 points which gave them the championship over Manitoba who fell short with their 1,264 points.

Michael MacDiarmid shared what an amazing experience it was for the team, “Going with a group of guys that you have been bowling with all year is awesome. You’re not too over-excited, but you are because it’s nationals.”

When asked what the final game was like MacDiarmid said he was full of nerves, “It was very nerve racking. We came out of the gate a little slow but in the end we turned it quick, had some fun and we went up points. It was an unreal experience.”

He also gave a little history on The Hurricanes, "We've been playing together, with roughly the same guys, for the last five or six years. We play in Kindersley, during the Tuesday night mix league ."

We hope to see more of The Hurricanes in the future and are sending them congratualtions on their championship.
