Ryan Meili is stepping down as the leader of the NDP.

Media sources are reporting Meili will be making the formal announcement this morning, and will ask the president of the party to start the leadership process shortly, so a new leader can be elected in the coming months. He clarified he will be staying on as the MLA for the riding of Saskatoon Meewasin.

Meili was elected leader of the NDP by the party in 2018, after failed leadership bids in 2009 and 2012. He helmed the party during the 2020 provincial election, where the NDP won 13 seats, the same number they had entering into the election.

Meili is originally from Moose Jaw and worked as a physician prior to entering politics. At the outset of the COVID-19 pandemic, he renewed his medical license and worked shifts at a testing and assessment centre in Saskatoon. He and his wife Mahli Brindamour, also a physician, have two children together.
