The provincial government will be raising awareness throughout this month for one of the leading causes in fatalities among children.

Saskatchewan's Ministry of Health has proclaimed September as Childhood and Youth Cancer Awareness Month due to the disease's impact on the lives of children, youth, and families in the province. The campaign is widely recognized throughout the country as well.

Rural and Remote Health Minister Greg Ottenbreit launched the movement by raising a flag coinciding with childhood cancer awareness at the beginning of the month. As the minister discussed the importance of the campaign, he also shared why raising awareness for the cause means a lot to him.

"As a parent who lost a child to this devastating disease, I am all too familiar with childhood cancer,” said Ottenbreit. “Through past experience, continuing work, as well as my current journey as a cancer patient, I also know what amazing advancements in treatment and care continue to be realized."

Ottenbreit continued by stating the important month is "another step in improving care and quality of life for patients, and ultimately, a cure through awareness."

New pediatric patients seen at Saskatchewan’s two cancer centres typically range from 40 to 50 each year.
