The Melfort Mustangs opened up the Centennial Cup on Thursday with a prime-time win over the Miramichi Timberwolves of the Maritimes Hockey League, now set to resume action today after a day-off on Friday in Oakville, Ontario.

The opening game saw Melfort score in the first for an early lead, adding another goal one-minute into the second, and near the end of the middle frame for a 3-0 lead. The 'Wolves responded shortly after to make it 3-1, but one more Mustangs goal to end the second led the teams to a scoreless third, and subsequent 4-1 final for the SJHL representatives.

The Mustangs were idle on Friday following the opening day of festivities. Now the Mustangs will be back on the ice today to face the Winkler Flyers of the Manitoba Jr Hockey League at 10:00 AM Saskatchewan time.

Another two days off Sunday and Monday, Melfort will play back-to-back games on Tuesday and Wednesday to close out the preliminary round. Tuesday's game sees them facing the SIJHL's Sioux Lookout Bombers, and then Wednesday is a matchup against the host Oakville Blades.

One interesting wrinkle with the Centennial Cup, the first place team following the preliminary round will get to choose which semi-final it will play in. The Centennial Cup is on until May 19.
