Coaches are valuable contributors to communities, and it is important to recognize them for the valuable time they devote to ensuring Canadians live an active, healthy lifestyle. It’s time to say ‘Thanks Coach.’

The Government of Saskatchewan’s Minister of Parks, Culture and Sport, Gene Makowsky proclaimed September 21 to 29, 2019 Coaches Week in the province in support of the Coaches Association of Saskatchewan and National Coaches Week.

This week-long celebration promotes the positive impact that coaches have on athletes and communities. It gives these largely volunteer, integral leaders of Canadian sport a simple thanks. The Coaches Association of Canada coined the term ‘Thanks Coach’ to show appreciation to this group.

“Coaches are an integral part of our strong sport system here in Saskatchewan,” Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Gene Makowsky said. “These coaches are leaders in our communities, inspiring and motivating athletes to reach for their personal bests and to have fun. Thank you to the many coaches who volunteer their time and for promoting active, healthy lifestyles in our province.”

Today more than 27,000 trained coaches work with 320,000 registered participants in Saskatchewan on 6,000 different local teams, clubs and leagues. Across Canada, more than 1.5 million Canadians have received coach training and one in seven Canadians will coach at some point in their lives.

“Coaches are leaders that foster safe and quality environments at all levels and abilities, encouraging respect, inclusivity, communication, dedication and teamwork,” said Doug Hillis, Chairperson of the Coaches Association of Saskatchewan. “They are everyday role models that can influence how people view sport, physical activity and themselves. This type of leadership builds healthier, active communities that positively impacts the future generations of our province.”
