Organizers for the Oyen Horse Show scheduled for this weekend have decided to cancel the event.

The reasoning behind the show's cancellation is due to a low number of registrants for the show. April Heeg, the main organizer for the event, was hoping for more horses to be part of the show. Unfortunately, she didn't receive the number of horses she was hoping for.

"There's a lot of expenses involved in putting anything on," said Heeg. "I needed a minimum number of horses to cover my expenses, and I couldn't get there."

Despite the show being cancelled, there are more events planned for the town and surrounding area in the upcoming months. Next month, Heeg and the rodeo committee are attempting to put together a youth rodeo for 18-year-olds and under in October.

Heeg is hoping to organize another attempt with the horse show once again in the spring. "I'd like to run with it probably in April or the early part of May."

Heeg has been involved with horses her entire life, and it shows in her passion for organizing and helping with these community events. She mentioned how she was involved with 4H, horse shows, and rodeos growing up.

"I have a daughter who I got involved with horses when she was itty bitty," explained Heeg. "And she is now off to college and we're still involved with horses."

The rodeo committee for the community and Heeg are always looking for volunteers for the upcoming events in Oyen. The group will be having a meeting in the near future to determine which dates they'll host the children's rodeo for the community.
