As a result of investigation by the Saskatchewan RCMP’s Major Crime Unit South in cooperation with multiple Saskatchewan RCMP units, Shawn Moostoos of Melfort, SK has been charged with:

- Two counts, first degree murder, Section 235(1), Criminal Code

- One count, attempted murder, Section 239(1)(a.1), Criminal Code

- One count, discharge firearm with intent to endanger life, Section 244(1), Criminal Code

Moostoos remains in custody and will make his first court appearance on September 8, 2021 at 10 a.m. in Nipawin.

2nd Update: 9:30 am September 7

Two men are charged after a homicide at Beardy’s and Okemasis’ Cree Nation on Friday.

At 6:47 a.m. September 3, 2021, Rosthern RCMP received a report from Rosthern EMS of a deceased male located in a truck in a rural area near Beardy’s and Okemasis’ Cree Nation. Based on the circumstances, the RCMP Major Crime Unit North (MCUN) took the investigational lead.

As a result of continued investigation, it was determined the rural truck scene was related to a report Rosthern RCMP received at 1:21 a.m. September 3 about an alleged altercation at a residence at Beardy’s and Okemasis’ Cree Nation. Three individuals reported to be involved were searched for by responding officers and were not located. A second, separate report was received concerning the same residence at 3:55 a.m.

As a result of the connection between the two scenes, a search of the residence at Beardy’s and Okemasis’ Cree Nation was conducted at 7:00 a.m. by Rosthern RCMP.

In the late afternoon of September 3, the adult male located deceased in the truck was confirmed to be 26-year-old Brandon Cameron from Beardy’s and Okemasis’ Cree Nation and his family was notified. His death is considered a homicide.

Around 12:30 p.m. September 3, Straughn Smallchild (1999-08-17) from Beardy’s and Okemasis’ Cree Nation, was arrested without incident by Rosthern RCMP at a residence at Beardy’s and Okemasis’ Cree Nation. He is charged with one count, second degree murder, section 235 of the Criminal Code. Smallchild will appear in Saskatoon Provincial Court on Tuesday, September 7, 2021 at 10:00 a.m.

On Saturday, September 4, Cory Littlepine (1989-07-12) was arrested at a residence at Beardy’s and Okemasis’ Cree Nation in relation to this investigation. He is charged with one count, accessory after the fact to aggravated assault, section 463 of the Criminal Code. Littlepine will appear in Saskatoon Provincial Court on Tuesday, September 7, 2021 at 10:00 a.m.

Also assisting in this investigation were the Saskatchewan RCMP Emergency Response Team, RCMP Police Dog Services, Saskatoon RCMP Forensic Identification Services and Saskatchewan Coroners Service.

1st UPDATE: 5:00 pm September 6  

Monday afternoon at approximately 4:00, investigators located the suspect at a residence in Melfort.  The suspect was taken into custody without incident.

Police are not seeking additional suspects in regards to this incident.  The investigation is ongoing and updates will be provided as soon as they become available.

The Saskatchewan RCMP thank the media and the public for their assistance.

A shooting on the James Smith First Nation, roughly 180 kilometres northeast of Saskatoon, has left two people dead, one injured and the RCMP is searching for the suspect.

The suspect of 33-year-old Shawn Moostoos, and he is believed to be armed and dangerous. The RCMP describe Moostoos as standing just over six feet tall, weighing 189 pounds, and having brown eyes and brown hair. He may be driving a white 2003 Pontiac Montana with Saskatchewan license plate 938 MBT. Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call 911 immediately.

Just before 7:30 p.m. last night, three people were shot in an incident in a home on the James Smith First Nation. A man and a woman were killed in the incident, with a second man injured. He was taken to hospital by ambulance. RCMP stated the victims and the suspect were known to each other.

A search has been underway for the suspect in the area around James Smith First nation, and this included search assistance from STARS Air Ambulance, the Saskatoon Police Service Air 1 unit, as well as surrounding RCMP detachments.

An emergency alert had been issued in the area after the shooting, but based on information gathered during the investigation, police have determined the alert is no longer required.
