Included in the Saskatchewan RCMP's provincial report for the period of September 11 to 17 was more on a scam situation developing around Rosetown.

No stranger to fraudulent activity, the Rosetown RCMP announced through the provincial media release that they were working with Facebook to have the scammer’s account banned.

Working to alert the public to a social media scam in the area, the release states, "the scammer lists high value items for sale on Facebook at a cheap price, and asks interested buyers to send a deposit or payment to hold the item for pick-up. Rosetown RCMP has determined the residents at the address provided by the seller don’t know the scammer/are unaware of the transaction, and that the items were never actually available."

Residents all around Saskatchewan are asked to be cautious in these scenarios. Key tips include:

  • Don't pay for or send a deposit for an item you have not seen
  • Do not give out personal or banking information to the buyer or seller
  • Take screenshots of the advertisement, the buyer/seller's contact information and your communications with them
  • If meeting in-person, complete the transaction during daylight hours and in a public place with other people around
  • Use common sense. If something seems too good to be true, it probably is. If something seems suspicious about the buyer/seller, trust your instincts and walk away
  • Inform the buy/sell site of any fraud or suspicious activity

Anyone who may have fallen victim to this fraudulent activity can report it to their local police service on the phone at 310-RCMP, and scams can also be reported to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 or https://www.antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca/report-signalez-eng.htm.
