Police officers across the province and SGI emphasized school zone safety in September. Law enforcement gave out nearly 7000 tickets in school zones , resulting in:

  • 6781 tickets for speeding
  • 5 tickets for drivers not obeying school bus safety lights
  • 2 tickets for drivers failing to yield to pedestrians in an intersection or crosswalk
  • 4 tickets to pedestrians walking into the path of a vehicle

Police issued tickets for over 6,000 other driving offences last month including:

  • 4,476 speeding tickets
  • 240 impaired-driving related offences
  • 414 tickets for distracted driving (294 of those for using a cellphone while driving)
  • 446 tickets for inappropriate or no seatbelt/child safety seat
  • 517 tickets for failing to obey a stop sign or red light

Nearly 130 child safety seats and seatbelts were inspected by car seat technicians, and law enforcement handed out 72 tickets for inappropriate or no seatbelt/child safety seat, and gave away seven child safety seats as encouragement to always correctly buckle up kids.

SGI reminds motorists that law enforcement are paying special attention to drunk driving throughout October, along with as distracted driving, speeding and seatbelt use.
