With the Easter Break over and classes starting again so begins again the unpredictability of children, with that in mind Tyler McMurchy SGI's Media Relations Manager wants to remind everyone to slow down in school zones and the consequences of not doing so.

McMurchy stated that "With school back, kids are gonna be excited to get back to class and those school zones are gonna be much more active places with students, school buses and additional traffic. So its something we always advise people to keep in mind when they are traveling through school zones. Speed limits tend to be lower speeding fines are higher in school zones, and the reason for that is our most precious resource tends to be found in school zones. You know when school zones are active they're filled with children, children aren't always paying attention to traffic rules, they may cross unexpectedly maybe not where they are supposed to. So it's really up to motorists to pay extra attention when going through school zones."

McMurchy also talked about the consequences of speeding and how even just being clocked in at over 20 mph can result in a $310 speeding ticket, "So that's more expensive than a regular speeding ticket which would be about $190 so it's a simple equation really, speeding in school zones is not only dangerous it's also expensive."

But school zone safety isn't just for drivers as McMurchy also wanted to remind parents "talk to their kids about how to keep themselves safe in a school zone which means crossing at crosswalks and controlled insertions and not jaywalking, making eye contact with drivers and waiting till they have stopped before starting to cross the street. Don't just assume that driver sees you make sure you know that he has seen you and keep your head up and screens down."

Finally, McMurchy added some tips for drivers to avoid speeding and collisions in school zones "When you're traveling through school zones make sure you lower your speed and be alert because again you have to watch out for any kids who may dart out into the street unexpectedly, yield to pedestrians at crosswalks and uncontrolled intersections. Of course, obey any commands from crossing guards you'll wanna take special care around school buses that have stopped to load or unload kids and watch for those school bus signals."
