After hoisting the Canterra Seeds Cup just ten days ago, the Melfort Mustangs are back to work with the Centennial Cup officially firing up Thursday from Oakville, Ontario.

Kerrobert's Austin Shepherd and the group returned to the practice ice last Friday after a few days of celebrations. The Mustangs took down the Flin Flon Bombers to earn a spot as one of the nine Junior "A" league champions joining the host Blades at the 2024 Centennial Cup.

The Mustangs are lined up for the first prime-time game of the tournament, playing the Miramichi Timberwolves of the Maritimes Hockey League at 5:30 PM local. Their second game goes against the MJHL's Winkler Flyers on Saturday at 10:00 AM. After a few days off, on Tuesday the Mustangs will face the SIJHL's Sioux Lookout Bombers in another 10:00 AM start, then the preliminary round ends on Wednesday as the Mustangs face the host Oakville Blades.

Rounding out the list of teams are the OJHL's Collingwood Blues, AJHL's Calgary Canucks, LHJQ's Collège Français de Longueuil, CCHL's Navan Grads, and the NOJHL's Greater Sudbury Cubs.

Back to the Mustangs game against the Bombers, Kerrobert's Shepherd will be taking on Macklin native Kaden Veller who is a defenceman for the Sioux Lookout Bombers. The two played hockey together at many different levels growing up, now meeting at the highest stage of Junior "A".

Also from Macklin, Mustangs assistant coach Tye Scherger is another piece of west-central flare getting set for action out east. Expect a check-in from locals at the Centennial Cup, running May 9-19.
