Shirley Ausen Obituary

1933 ~ 2024 (age 91)

Shirley B L Ausen, formerly of Marengo, SK, passed away Wednesday, June 26th at the Kindersley Heritage Manor, where she had resided for the past five years. Shirley was the second of six children born to Gudrun and Oscar Paulhus. A sister and three more brothers were to follow. Her sister passed away when only a toddler. Early years were spent on the farm, helping with chores and watching her little brothers, which at times, could be a busy job. Shirley’s passion for learning was inspired by her mother, who also was an avid reader and learner, as well as a close friend and mentor to Shirley. Shirley’s formal education began in the Round Grove School, which she attended from grades 1 through 8. She took correspondence courses for Grades nine and ten and stayed in Estevan to complete her grades eleven and twelve. While attending Normal School in Saskatoon, Shirley stayed with the Fishers, exchanging light housekeeping and watching their daughters for her room and board. Shirley greatly enjoyed her time with the Fishers. Shirley’s first teaching jobs were in one room schoolhouses but moved on to schools with one or two grade classrooms. She taught 9 years in Carnduff before moving to the Kindersley area to teach, first in another multi grade school in Glidden, and then to Marengo, which was to become her home. Shirley had two daughters, Margaret, and Evelyn, and one granddaughter, Jessi. Shirley’s last five years have been spent in Kindersley’s Heritage Manor with increasingly declining health. Shirley would have been both humbled and gladdened to have known that she had become the favorite teacher of so many students and parents. Shirley is survived by her daughters, Margaret Ausen, and Evelyn Faubert, her granddaughter, Jessi (Jesse Loessin), her brothers, Lloyd (Rita) Paulhus, Robert (Linda) Paulhus, and Merle Paulhus, and her sister in law, Gladys Paulhus. Shirley was predeceased by her parents, Oscar and Gudrun Paulhus, her siblings Donnaleen, and Milo Paulhus, her sister-in-law Adele Paulhus, and her son in law, Murray Faubert. Service details to follow.
