This weekend will be the fourteenth annual Kerrobert KCRA Rodeo held at the Kerrobert Fair Grounds. The rodeo will kick off on Friday, July 5th at 5pm with ladies barrel racing and team roping jackpot.

Kerrobert keeps the rodeo grounds in use every year as they have many locals who love to rodeo. Although entries have not been increasing over the last few years the crowds have. Kerrobert is lucky to have the KCRA sanction a rodeo in their town, the KCRA hosts rodeos from Cold Lake A.B. to White Wood S.K. Kerrobert is located in the centre meaning their rodeo receives a lot of action from surrounding rodeo contestants.

This year, there are about 340 entries with 235 contestants. The rodeo will have fourteen events along with peewee and junior team roping, steer riding, and barrel racing.

The KCRA is a different rodeo association as the rodeo stays in one place for a weekend. Most rodeos travel to different towns over the week but the KCRA hosts two rodeos in the same town on the same weekend.

The KCRA will be hosting their finals in September, for contestants to qualify they need to make at least half of the KCRA rodeos throughout the season and top ten contestants will move on.

Dustin Gintaut, President of the Kerrobert Rodeo Association, tells us what we can expect from the rodeo, “Slack starts at 10am on Saturday and 8am on Sunday. Once the rodeo starts it will kick off with the saddle bronc horses and get the adrenaline pumping for everyone, then we’ll roll right through until the bull riding at the end of the rodeo.”

On Sunday there will be a breakfast along with Cowboy Church afterwards at 10am, the Cowboy Church is an annual service the Kerrobert KCRA Rodeo has. Gintaut said that the service is open to the public and will be at the grounds, he explained that one of the members runs it and takes care of the service every year.

The rodeo is an outdoor event, and though mother nature is threatening rain for the weekend Gintaut said that wouldn’t be a problem, “If it does rain there is a tent set up so there will be shelter for everyone, the rodeo however will need quite a bit of rain to shut it down. The last couple weekends we’ve been running in mud so the rodeo will be on either way.”
