Town employees do their part to make the community they work in a little bit better every day.
In the Town of Biggar, residents were recently treated to a special get together on Main Street to celebrate the Town's ongoing revitalization efforts.
We reached out to the local town office in Biggar to see how things went, and Community Development Officer in Biggar Erin Hadden shared that they actually had nothing to do with it, outside of participating in the fun.
"It wasn't actually hosted by the Town, it was hosted by the Revitalization committee." shared Hadden about the block party organizers, "It exists sort of separately from the Town. It's a volunteer organization, and they put it all together and hosted it and it was a really great time."
New to the role of CDO, Hadden talked about her knowledge of the committee to date. Much of the progress so far has been driven by a group of stakeholder volunteers with continued support from the Town. It's the same thing when it comes time to celebrate, as the volunteers got this past Friday's block party together to enjoy the fruits of their labour according to Hadden.
The Town is always looking to do their part with things being spearheaded around the community.
"We are always here to provide support and direction and those kinds of things." said Hadden. "We have just a wonderfully involved community, and coming together to celebrate the unique and wonderful things that are happening in Biggar, it's just really great to see."
A great place for congregating in downtown BiggarFriday was a perfect example of what the space is intended for. The reason the project began at Main Street was so it could be used by a majority of the population. With the beautification complete, expect more events in the downtown core.
"Absolutely. There will be lots and lots of things that will be happening in that downtown core along Main Street throughout the tourist season coming up."
Hadden touted the next big thing coming up in Biggar as the annual Town and Country Fair Days which will run June 9-10-11.
"There is a parade. Vendors will have sidewalk sales, and there will be concerts and fireworks and all sorts of stuff going on."
That weekend will bring another chance for local volunteers to get together and strut their stuff.
Joining the new summer display around the local walking path, another Biggar athlete was immortalized a few weeks back alongside the great Sandra Schmirler.
What you see above is the direct result of another committee's hard work. The local credit union shared recently their ode to local silver medalist para-Olympian and world snowboarding champion Lisa de Jong (Goring).
"That was spearheaded by another volunteer committee, a group of people that said 'we want to see this, we want to do this, we want to recognize this; this is something of value to us and important to us and we want to get it done'." said Hadden, "They came to us looking for guidance about how to go about it, and we provided the support necessary in the practical details in order to support them in getting this done."
Hadden is so impressed by the community's desire to involved. It's neat to see people come together, but it's another thing all together to create something great.
"There is so much buy in here, it's just marvelous. It's great to see."
