The number has now grown to five for candidates vying to become the new Premier of Saskatchewan.

Deputy Minister Alanna Koch and Justice Minister Gordon Wyant will be leaving their posts in cabinet to campaign for the Saskatchewan Party leadership and to replace Premier Brad Wall in the new year.

Ministers wanting to campaign for the positions must leave their seat in order to run.

A third candidate announces he'll run for Saskatchewan Party leadership

With the news of Koch taking an unpaid leave of absense to join the leadership race, Wall has named Intergovernmental Affairs Deputy Minister Kent Campbell as interim Deputy Minister to the Premier.

Campbell has worked in the Government of Saskatchewan for the past 21 years. His resume in politics extends to senior leadership roles as the Deputy Minister of Energy and Resources, Deputy Minister of the Economy, and Deputy Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs.

“I have every confidence that Kent Campbell will ensure there is an orderly transition,” said Wall. “Our government will continue to deliver the best possible programs and service to Saskatchewan people, and the operations of the public service will remain business-as-usual.”

Wyant and Koch will accompany Jeremy Harrison, Tina Beaudry-Mellor and Ken Cheveldayoff as the other candidates.
