Children at the Walter Aseltine School were given the opportunity to learn some very important fire safety tips last week.

The students were visited by Tammy Saathoff and Kimiko Otterspoor, two volunteer fire fighters, who taught them the importance of planning an exit strategy in the event of a fire. The theme of their visit was “Not all Heroes wear Capes,” which was shared with the fire department during Fire Prevention Week.

While the number of home fires has drastically decreased in the West Central region in the last several decades, it is always important to make sure one has a clear way of escaping the building should a fire occur.

It is preferable to have two ways out of every room. If possible, a window and a door should be made into escape routes. It is also important to make sure that both the window and the door can be opened quickly.

As always, it is recommended to have a fire alarm on every floor of the house, as well as one in every sleeping area. It is also important to check the fire alarms once a month, and to replace the batteries twice a year.

Fire Prevention Week took place from October 6 to the 12th, with this school meeting taking place just before the Rosetown Fire Fighter’s Gala.
