Summer like weather returned to the province this week including the West Central region. It also appears the warmer conditions will be sticking around for a while as we head into October this weekend.

Meteorologist Terri Lang with Environment Canada explains why this warm spell is blanketing West Central Saskatchewan late in the year.

“A big ridge of high pressure is over western Canada and it’s like a big upside-down U with the jet stream and it keeps the heat sort of under that dome and deflects all the weather systems way to the north. So that’s why we’re getting the warm air.”

The ridge of high pressure will stay in place until next week with well above seasonal temperatures for this time of year. No records were broken during the hottest days this week. The 30-year average high for this time year is 16 degrees and overnight lows are around +2.

These warmer temperatures have also pushed the frost back which can be frequent this late in the year.
