Local youth learned the ins and outs of bike safety while they maneuvered through obstacle courses at the Kindersley Bike Rodeo this past Wednesday. The Kindersley Chamber of Commerce and Town of Kindersley joined forces for the event, in an effort to raise awareness about bike safety.

The event was held outside at the West Central Events Centre and included six obstacle courses, bike registration, bike inspection, as well as, important bike safety tips for youth to keep in mind as they get geared up for summer riding.

Denise Sarada, with the Kindersley and District Chamber of Commerce, shared the event was organized to celebrate Bike Safety Week and were focusing on key safety areas including, stopping, starting, balancing and proper helmet safety as well.

Emma Ahrens and Carson Solomon, were among the several kids who braved the chilly weather to come take part in the event.

“I wanted to come out so I can learn about bikes and be safe,” said Emma. Carson also shared why he came down to the Bike Rodeo, “My parents wanted me to come, but I came because I thought it’d be a little bit of fun to learn how to ride my bike a little bit better”.

Carson also added that although he wasn’t “so good” at some of the obstacles right off the start, he said he was already getting better and of course, having fun in the process.

Two police officers also attended the event, including Constable Justine Dunlop, “We’re here today to inspect the bikes and the helmets to make sure they fit properly, and to make sure the kids are being safe on their bikes and know the proper signals, including turning and stopping”.

The KCS Kobra’s joined the event as well, raising money through a BBQ event, selling hamburgers, hot dogs, drinks and snacks.

Youth who came out to participate also had a chance to win a few prizes and went home with a grab bag full of bike safety pamphlets and activities.

This was not the first Bike Rodeo for Kindersley, however, Sarada said it has been a few years since the last one took place.
