September 10th of every year is recognized as World Suicide Prevention Day; a day where people join together from around the globe to spread awareness with a number of events.

The Town of Oyen will be participating in the awareness day by hosting an event at the Family and Community Support Services Community Centre in town.

Residents from the community are invited to attend the free event on Thursday, September 15th from 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM. A free lunch will be offered featuring beef-on-a-bun.

Resources will be on-site for attendees including staff members from the office and a family school liason worker. Communities in Action Coordinator Madisen Flemmer spoke to West Central Online about the significance of the event for the community, and how the staff wanted to coordinate the event with the public's busy schedules so people are able to attend.

"The resources will be available so people can ask questions and utilize the resources for more information, and even set up an appointment," said Flemmer.

Flemmer added how a gratitude board will be available at the community centre as well. It will present attendees with the opportunity to anonymously write down positive messages such as what they appreciate in life, and people will be able to read the messages posted on the board. Flemmer explained how the gratitude board will engage the community, and allow residents to read positive messages displayed by fellow community members.

No doubt the event will not only help raise awareness in the community, but will also reach out to aid residents within the area who are seeking help.

According to the World Health Organization, over 800,000 people die from suicide each year and is the second leading cause of death among 15 to 29-year-olds. Although, besides the support of family and friends, there are many different programs and services available to those seeking help.
