The provincial government is making changes to how much jurors receive when called upon to fulfill their civic duty.

As new amendments were recently passed, residents who are called upon for jury duty will receive $110 per day of service. This is a steep increase from the former payout, which was just $15 per day for civil trials and $80 per day for criminal trials. Under the newly introduced compensation, it will not matter which kind of trial the juror is serving on, both criminal and civil trial jurors will receive $110 per day.

Don Morgan, Minister of Justice and Attorney General, said the province is grateful for the contributions of everyone who acts as a juror.

“Being a juror is an important civic duty, and these changes will ensure everyone has an equal opportunity to perform this duty regardless of their financial circumstances”.

Additionally, the Government of Saskatchewan will provide financial aid to those jurors who require child care or dependent care while serving on the jury.

The amendments outline the amounts payable for care services will be based on the actual expenses incurred, to a maximum of $40 per day for child care and $80 per day for elder or other dependent care expenses.

The changes will be effective September 1, 2019, under The Jury Amendment Act, 2019.
