Residents of Eston and surrounding communities are preparing for a large event which will greatly benefit the town moving forward.

Organizers of the Eston Sportsman Dinner have been planning and working diligently to offer residents a memorable evening while helping out the community. The event came to be when members of the community will looking to bring in money which could be spread across recreation facilities and programs.

In some instances, families have a difficult time putting their children in recreational sports due to their financial situation. The plan is to contribute some of the funds raised to give children the opportunity to experience local extra-curricular programming. "Proceeds will go to Eston Kidsport to help kids and families who need help with registration costs and equipment," said Chris Keleher, Recreation Director for the Town of Eston.

Keleher explained how more of the funds will be applied to projects involving local public facilities. Organizers are excited about the event contributing to increasing the town's infrastructure. "With the [hockey arena] being 25 years old, it obviously needs some work and with our outdoor pool on the fairgrounds," said Keleher. "We're going to put it back into our facilities, and at the end of the day, that's going to benefit the community and its users."

Usually, the town hosts a Kidsport golf tournament in the early fall to help gain funds towards the program. Unfortunately, last year's tournament was rained out and residents needed to plan an alternative strategy for the new year. Keleher and the organizing group wanted to create an event which would also go along with the 25th anniversary of the town's rink. The organizers wanted to go with a big event which would gain the interest from residents.

"We started putting together the idea of what we're going to do," explained Keleher. "The thought came up to have a sportsman dinner and we went from there."

The dinner will feature World Series champion and former Toronto Blue Jays player Roberto Alomar and TSN sportscaster Natasha Staniszewski. Chris Keleher explains the process on inviting both celebrities to the event in the clip below:
