Rosetown’s Allie Gawryluik had a fantastic showing at the 2019 Western Canada Summer Games. Gawryluik travelled to Swift Current to compete as part of Team Saskatchewan’s women's wrestling team.

The first two days of competition were team duals. In a dual meet, the wrestler not only wins the match for themselves, but also gains points for their team. The dual scores would determine day three of the competitions individual match ups.

Day one saw Gawryluik up against opponents from Nunavut (watch this match below), Yukon and The North West Territories. The athlete, who has been wrestling for the past nine years, came away with victories all three matches.

Day two was another big day with Gawryluik facing competition from wrestlers from Manitoba and Alberta. The 15 year old again couldn’t be beaten and won both matches giving her a perfect 5-0 record for duals and a place in the gold medal match on day three of the competition.

These wins, along with the rest of the team Sask women’s wrestling teams scores overall, earned the group the silver medal.

Day three, individual competitions, saw Gawryluik up against a wrestler from Alberta. It was a tight match that went the entire 4 minutes, but again, Gawryluik persevered. With a match score of 3-1, Gawryluik earned herself a the gold.

“It feels good to know that what you worked for paid off,” said Gawryluik of her success, “It’s a good reward for all the work you put in.”

Gawryluik’s regular season Coach Russ Fersch, who was in charge of running the wrestling events at the games, said that Gawryluik was the only Saskatchewan wrestler to go undefeated at the games.

The student, who is preparing for her grade 10 year at RCHS, shared that she is taking a bit of a break from the mats. A previous injury has the wrestler scheduled for shoulder surgery. Gawryluik hopes to be back to herself for the start of the school wresting season in November.
