One of the largest construction projects in Kindersley's history officially began yesterday morning with a sod-turning event near the West Central Events Centre.

A crowd gathered at 9:30 AM on July 5th to mark the beginning of  the new Kindersley indoor pool construction project with a groundbreaking ceremony. Crews are already at work on the previous outdoor pool as construction on the new indoor facility will be taking place later this year.

Members from town council and administration, project companies, local businesses, and residents attended the event to usher in the launch of the exciting project. The event kicked off with a speech from Mayor Rod Perkins, who shared his joy over the commencement of the project after being elected in to office in the latter half of 2016.

Listen below to Perkins give thanks to the Big Dippers Pool Fundraising Committee during his speech for their work in raising money towards the project:

The next steps for the community is to help raise more funds and services towards the facility as construction continues through the year. Councillor Randy Ervine discussed how there will be exciting opportunities for interested donors towards naming rights for different aspects of the pool.

"There will be the opportunity for people to get their name on everything from a water fountain, diving boards, water slides, and everything," said Ervine. "The fundraising itself will be out to the public within a week or so."

Ervine stated how the project has already received donations from the community and local businesses. As it sounds right now, there will be even more donations coming in over the course of the construction period as they look to raise enough to equal out the $6.6 million price tag for the facility.

Earlier this year, council expressed how they are hopeful for the pool to be operational by October 2018. Just over $1 million has been locked up in the town's reserves towards the construction project already. In addition, the Big Dippers have contributed $100,000.

Residents from the community who attended the ceremony took a photo with councillors and town staff to celebrate the occasion.
