Sunday will mark the centennial of a critical day in Canadian history. Communities not only in west central Saskatchewan, but the entire country will be gathering on Sunday to pay their respects to the soldiers who fought in the Battle of Vimy Ridge.

A number of soldiers from the area served in the battle which began on April 9th, 1917. The four day battle, which took place in northern France, was a massive victory for the Allied forces. But, the victory came at a cost as it was known as one of the bloodiest battles in Canadian history.

3,598 Canadians were killed during the fight and another 7,000 wounded. Five men from Kindersley served in the battle; three were killed and two were wounded.

Deceased:

  • Private William Roy Hawes
  • Private Weldon Adshade
  • Private Sorn Mandus Kelland

Wounded:

  • Private James Charles Morrow
  • Private William Brown

For members of the Kindersley Legion, it will be an important day of remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice. "It's a big part of our history and something of national pride," said Scott Holloway, Chaplain for the Kindersley Legion. "I think for the veterans delivering [the ceremony], it is going to be something special to them."

In Kindersley, the ceremony will be taking place on Sunday afternoon at Baker Park, which is located on Main Street. The event kicks off at 1:30 PM with members marching from the Legion, and the service beginning at 2:00 PM. The ceremony will include a moment of remembrance for those who fought and lost their lives in the battle, laying of the wreaths, and a presentation including students from Elizabeth Middle School.

"It's going to be about a half hour long," explained Holloway. "We're just wanting to highlight the sacrifice and what the soldiers accomplished 100 years ago on Sunday."

The public is welcomed to attend both the ceremony at Baker Park and a gathering at the Legion Hall for refreshments after the service.
