The province is taking the opportunity this week to recognize one of its most prolific and successful industries.

Saskatchewan Mining Week has been set from May 29th to June 4th after being proclaimed at the Saskatchewan Legislative Building in Regina on Monday.

The end goal for the special week is aiming towards recognizing workers and the industry for its importance to the people and business activity of Saskatchewan. The Saskatchewan Mining Association (SMA) has organized a number of events for week with an overall theme "Mining in Transformational Times".

“This year’s theme speaks to the resiliency and innovative spirit that defines the qualities of Saskatchewan’s dynamic mining sector,” said Dustin Duncan, Minister for Energy and Resources. “Part of our job in government is to do our best to enable businesses to invest in our province, helping to create sustainable jobs, and grow our economy.

Natural Resources Canada reported Saskatchewan finishing the year with $6.4 million towards total value from all mineral sales in 2016. In addition, the province led all provinces in mining capital expenditures.

According to the latest statistics from the provincial government, Saskatchewan remains as the largest potash producer in the world. The province's potash sector holds nearly half of the world’s potash reserves, and is the world’s second largest primary uranium producer.

Not to mention the province is known for its wide production in other minerals such as gold, base metals, clays, coal, and diamonds.

Different seminars and workshops will be coordinated throughout the week in association with the week. On Saturday, June 3, the SMA will hold their 49th Annual Emergency Response/Mine Rescue Skills Competition at Prairieland Park in Saskatoon.
