Residents hoping to enjoy a fire during the last long weekend of summer in Saskatchewan may have a change of plans.

A fire ban has been issued by the Ministry of Environment for all open fires and fireworks. The ban affects all provincial parks including Crown land south of the Churchill River system.

Parks and recreation sites incorporated into the ban include:

  • The Battlefords
  • Blackstrap
  • Buffalo Pound
  • Candle Lake
  • Clarence-Steepbank Lakes
  • Crooked Lake
  • Cypress Hills
  • Danielson
  • Douglas
  • Duck Mountain
  • Echo Valley
  • Good Spirit Lake
  • Great Blue Heron
  • Greenwater Lake
  • Katepwa Point
  • Lac La Ronge
  • Makwa Lake
  • Meadow Lake
  • Moose Mountain
  • Narrow Hills
  • Pike Lake
  • Rowan’s Ravine

  • Cannington Manor
  • Cumberland House
  • Fort Carlton
  • Fort Pitt
  • Last Mountain House
  • Steele Narrows

The ban has been placed due to extreme wildfire hazards throughout the province and will be in effect until conditions improve and the ministry cancels the fire prohibition.

Although, campers are allowed to use certain items for the purpose of heating and cooking during the ban:

  • Self-contained heating devices
  • Gas barbecues
  • Propane fire pits
  • Charcoal briquettes used in park-provided barbecues and fire pits

For the early part of the weekend, temperatures are set to climb to approximately 30°C in west central Saskatchewan. Sunday and Monday will see daytime highs cool to the low to mid 20s range until rising back to around 30°C by the mid-week.
