Just two days ago, the Kindersley Klippers lost a game to the Estevan Bruins that they probably could have won if they had played the full 60 minutes. They took that lesson to heart as they opened up a weekend road trip Friday night against the La Ronge Ice Wolves with a 5-3 win in what was probably the most complete game this team has played all season.

From the very get go, the Klippers came flying out of the gate and used their speed well despite the smaller ice surface of the Mel Hegland Uniplex. After Brett Sweet was tested early in the Klippers net as the Ice Wolves earned the game's first shot, the Klippers would outshoot the Ice Wolves 7-2 in the first five minutes of the period.

Seven minutes in, and the Ice Wolves would crack the ice. As the Klippers were finishing a change, Gavin Mattey had the puck in the Ice Wolves zone and found Aaron Greyeyes up ice who came down on a partial breakaway before firing a wrist shot that blew by Sweet to give the Ice Wolves the game's first goal.

With five minutes left in the period, the Klippers would see their first powerplay from a Kole Christensson high sticking call, but it would be cut short for a minute of 4-on-4 when Chase Friedt-Mohr was nabbed for roughing.

Once La Ronge's penalty ended, the Klippers struck shorthanded thanks to a relentless forecheck from Jaxon Georget who hemmed two defenceman in their own zone by himself for about 15 seconds before finally turning the puck over to his teammate Ethan King. King gave Georget the puck for a onetimer, the shot was stopped, but the rebound kicked out to King for his second shorthanded goal of the season.

After 1: Klippers 1 - 1 Ice Wolves, shots 18-10 Klippers

The Klippers continued to poor on the shots in the second in a period that actually felt more dominant, but again they would give up the first tally of the period. After a shot was blocked in the slot, the puck was swatted at from every direction a number of times and Sweet stayed at the top of the crease to cover as much net as possible, but what he wasn't expecting was the puck to pop up above him. He reached up with the blocker as he fell to get a piece of it, but the puck landed behind him and in the net with Curren Wintonyk-Pilot getting the goal although anyone could have been given credit.

After the goal, the Klippers took another penalty thanks to Max Kathol for holding, but again the Klippers struck shorthanded. This time Jack Michell would make a nice play at centre to prevent the Ice Wolves from entering the zone and his pass to Matt Mazzocchi caught the defence flat footed. He had Aiden Bangs there if he needed on a 2-on-0, but Mazzocchi's wrist shot beat Xavier Cannon clean less than a minute after they gave up the lead.

Bangs wouldn't be held off the score sheet though as he scored his first of the season 12 minutes in. On a rush down the left side of the ice, Bangs found a hole short side under the blocker and a quick snap shot was all it took to give the Klippers the lead and Bangs his first goal of the season, along with Logan Linklater's first assist and Josh Pufahl's fifth.

After 2: Klippers 3 - 2 Ice Wolves, shots 29-15 Klippers in the game, 11-5 Klippers in the period

SJHL Rookie of the Week Tylin Hilbig was the only member of his line who didn't have a goal going into the third period after the goals from Bangs and Mazzocchi, but he remedied that in the first 11 seconds of the period. Similar to Bangs' goal, Tylin Hilbig down the left side of the ice whistled a wrist shot past Cannon from the hashmarks on the wall to give his team a two goal lead and a big boost to start the period.

The Ice Wolves would strike back by taking a play out of the Klippers book and scoring shorthanded on an unfortunate play. Chase Friedt-Mohr wound up for a slapshot from the point but whiffed on the puck, and Greyeyes was the one to pick it up. He hustled down the ice and beat Sweet on another hard wrist shot to keep his team within one.

Then we got a rarity for the Klippers after the halfway mark of the period: a Klippers powerplay goal. It started when Coletyn Boyarski squared up with Lane Snell after a hit and Snell dropped the gloves for a quick shot to Boyarski's chin. Boyarksi didn't take the gloves off until he was already on the ground to defend himself, so both men earned a 10 minute misconduct while Snell earned the extra two minutes for roughing.

Ten seconds into the powerplay, Aiden Bangs won the puck off the draw to Logan Linklater, and he fired a shot that was tipped in by Mazzocchi for his second of the game and his fourth of the season.

The Klippers were outshooting the Ice Wolves again in the third period until two consecutive penalties, hooking on Ethan Hilbig and a high stick on Mark Snarr, overlapped by three seconds in the final six minutes of the game gave the Ice Wolves some time to pull the goalie and try to tie it. Sweet made a couple nice saves after a scramble in the crease, and would finish the night with a win over La Ronge for his second straight.

FINAL: Klippers 5 - 3 Ice Wolves, shots 38-25 Klippers in the game, 10-9 Ice Wolves in the period

The Klippers have won four of their last five games, and in that time have scored six shorthanded goals in that time frame which is good enough to tie for the league lead with the Estevan Bruins.

They will finish their weekend road swing with another familiar opponent from the last week in the Nipawin Hawks.
