Drunk driving continues to be a serious problem in Saskatchewan with 353 impaired driving offenses last month - compared to 279 the month before. In December of 2015, there were 308 offenses related to impaired driving.

Law enforcement and SGI have increased their efforts to combat drinking and driving for three consecutive months, and will continue to do so.

SGI and police continue to encourage having a plan for a safe ride home before going out and drinking.

Earl Cameron, Executive Vice President of the Auto Fund spoke about the high impaired driving numbers. "It's certainly disappointing. After extensive coverage in the media about safe ride options, increased enforcement and the tougher impaired driving laws that would be coming into effect on January. 1, 2017, people are still choosing to drive when they shouldn't. Wouldn't it be great to be able to report zero impaired driving charges next month? And it's possible — by making smart choices, and planning ahead. Let's make sure everyone gets home safe."

Law enforcement also issued the following tickets last month:

  • 282 distracted driving offences (144 of those were for cellphone use)
  • 2,894 speeding violations
  • 167 tickets for inappropriate or no seatbelt/child safety seat
