SaskPower has begun the competitive process for supporters interested in their first utility-scale solar project.

The Crown corporation has now entered in the Request for Proposal (RFP) stage of the process, and this is only the start. SaskPower is hoping this will be one of the first projects which will help achieve their goal for 50 per cent renewable energy capacity by 2030 by adding both solar and wind power options.

This is the first competitive process for a utility-scale solar project of this magnitude outside of Ontario in the country as well.

34 proponents have qualified for the next phase after the Request for Qualification (RFQ) issued by the corporation to identify independent power producers.

No definite location has been chosen for the site yet. Although, the corporation has been eyeing a possible spot in southern Saskatchewan. Participants will have the option of either choosing the site recommended by SaskPower or proposing a different area. Locations must follow a criteria including proximity of electrical infrastructure, environmental impact, and local community input.
