Residents in Saskatchewan will see yet another bump to the minimum wage in 2017.

The provincial government have announced there will be an increase to the wage effective October 1st to $10.96 an hour. Currently, minimum wage in Saskatchewan sits at $10.72 an hour.

The change was approved after a review process performed by provincial legislation. An annual review is based on changes to the consumer price index and the average hourly wage from the previous year.

When legislation begins reviewing potential changes to the minimum wage, an indexation formula is used to calculate the increase. This process has been in use for six years now.

There are approximately 49,900 minimum wage and low wage earners in Saskatchewan.  The majority are women (62 per cent in 2016) and youth ages 15-19 (35 per cent).  Nearly 70 per cent of low wage earners work in retail or accommodation and food services.
