Westerly winds are pushing wildfire smoke towards west central Saskatchewan and will be affecting residents over the next several hours.

Environment Canada has issued a special air quality statement for communities in the province due to smoke from the fires creating high levels of air pollution. According to the latest reports from the weather agency, elevated pollution levels are expected today..

Since the smoke plumes have begun deteriorating air quality in the province, residents may experience symptoms such as increased coughing, throat irritation, headaches or shortness of breath. The quality of the air could potentially take a toll on children, seniors, and those with cardiovascular or lung disease such as asthma.

If your home is not air-conditioned, be sure the house does not get too warm when doors and windows are closed to keep out smoke. Exposure to too much heat can also result in the symptoms stated above. (information provided by https://weather.gc.ca)

Smoke is causing poor air quality and reducing visibility. Smoke is expected or occurring.

Westerly winds are spreading significant amounts of wildfire smoke across the Prairies and will continue to do so until a cold front pushes through the region. The cold front will move through western Saskatchewan Tuesday morning, and then slump southeastwards, moving through eastern Saskatchewan by Tuesday evening, and then across southern Manitoba on Tuesday night. As the cold front passes, cleaner air will move in from the north.

Be air aware! Check your local weather forecasts and alerts so you know when to take extra care.

Visit www.airhealth.ca for information on how to reduce your health risk and your personal contribution to pollution levels, as well as for current and forecast AQHI values.
