Just 20 minutes East of Outlook is where the town of Broderick lays.

Crews were called to the scene late Friday night and continued working throughout the evening to put out the large fire that started.

The fire began at a cube plant in Broderick and spread to hundreds of hay bales.

Winds in the area were gusting near 50 km/h on Friday evening, with the blowing smoke reducing visibility on surrounding roads, including Highway 15.

Firefighters ask people avoid the area.

Here are a few tips to keep in mind to avoid starting a grass fire:

  • You may not be permitted to do outdoor burning in some municipalities and during some seasons.
  • Closely attend all outdoor fires. Be sure to put out the fire completely before leaving.
  • Avoid burning on windy, dry days.
  • When conditions are windy or dry, it is too easy for open burning to spread out of control.
  • Do not use gasoline or other flammable or combustible liquids to burn brush, trash, or other waste.
