A spring hockey tournament in Calgary this past weekend saw a few different west-central Saskatchewan based teams bring home a medal. The Alberta Champions Cup is a male and female tournament featuring over 290 teams and 25 divisions, and more than a few of the brackets saw some serious local representation, resulting in three different gold-medals and one silver medal.

Starting off with the 2014 Sask West Wheat Kings, they won the gold medal against the 2014 Eagles during what was an undefeated tournament overall. After a 7-0 semi-final win against the 2014 Cranbrook Colts, the Wheat Kings used another offensive explosion to beat the Eagles by a score of 9-2 and take home the gold.

The 2010 Sask West Wheat Kings went 3-0-1, before picking up a pair of playoff wins during their time in Calgary. After the round-robin, the Wheat Kings beat the 2010 Thundercats 5-2, advancing to the finals against 2010 Skillz HC where the Wheat Kings earned a hard fought 3-2 win to take home gold.

Finally, the 2015 Sask West Wheat Kings also lit up the scoreboard on their way to a gold medal. Finishing the round-robin perfect at 4-0, the Wheat Kings won handily 9-2 in the semi-finals against 2015 S.A Golden Eagles T2. After that the gold medal game finished 7-0 against the 2015 PG Whalers to complete the perfect tournament and send the Wheat Kings home as champions.

Another local team in the 2015 Western Prairie Thunder were also had a good showing. Looking at the girls side the local team finished 3-1 in pool play, and won silver in the female U9 TIER 1/2 bracket. The Thunder advanced to the finals with a 3-2 semi-final win over the 2015 Dragons-Sandbeck, but another close game in the finals did not go Western Prairie's way losing 5-3 to the U9 Scarlet Knights.

With several medals coming back home across the Saskatchewan border, it's safe to say the Alberta tournament was a successful outing. Even if they didn't medal, other teams in attendance got to experience some great spring action.
