As part of fire prevention week, local fire departments engage in public education. The Wilkie fire department has had a busy week being in and out of local schools, teaching students the importance of fire safety. They also held a public open house with a  Barbecue on Wednesday Night in which 400 people attended. Proceeds went towards upgrading new equipment and the possibility of a new fire engine, and Jaws of life upgrades altough exaclty how much money was raised is yet to be finalized. Wilkie Fire Chief Craig Sittler says that it was one of the biggest turnouts that the Wilkie Fire Department has seen. Sittler aknowledges the sucess of public education at shcools as well as the weather for the large turnout.
