Grade 7 and 8 students from Eaton School had the chance to learn first-hand about our provincial government last week. A total of 17 students were welcomed by the Provincial Capital Commission and took part in the semi-annual event, A Day in the Legislative Assembly.

“It was a full day,” said Adam Naismith, teacher at Eaton School, adding “we started by watching the welcome of the guests in chamber, and got to see a couple questions in Question Period.”

Other activities during the day included a tour of the building encompassing the library and the cabinet room. One prominent highlight from the day was when they were all able to meet Premier Scott Moe and other political figures. Kinderlsey MLA Ken Francis and Rosetown – Elrose MLA, Jim Reiter, also welcomed the students, with Francis inviting them into his office to take a look around.

The day ended with perhaps favourite part for the students, partaking in a panel discussion, sitting in the MLA’s seats on the floor of the Chamber and were able to ask their political questions.

Naismith said although it is a part of their regular curriculum, they spent some time in the days leading up to the trip preparing and gathering information. He said this was to help the students feel confident and prepared going into the day and he added they all did great asking their questions to gain a deeper understanding of our system of government.

Eaton School students made up the majority of the just over 40 total students that attended the semi-annual event.
