Golf season is well underway and a local golfer has already seen success on the courses this year.

Kindersley native Connor Tate finished in the top spot of his age group at last weekend's Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour's Junior Worlds Qualifier in Carstairs, Alberta. The teenager completed the tournament with five over par and a score of 149 overall.

Moreover, he was four strokes above 18-year-old Calgary product Justin Loro for the Junior Boys title in the tournament.

"It felt good to go back-to-back," said Tate, who won the tournament for a second straight year. "I like that course, I really enjoyed it."

Tate explained how he was battling the elements during the tournament with the weather changing throughout the days as well. Mix that along with some stiff competition, and it made for a good challenge to open the season.

"It was nice for a bit, then it was 50 km/h winds, raining, hailing, it was on and off," he mentioned. "It was interesting and it was a good test."

As for what's to come from the young golfer in 2017, it will be a very busy schedule once again this summer. Victoria Day long weekend will be the only time he has off before he participates in tournaments over the next few weekends.

He said one of the main tournaments he's focusing on right now is provincials and then hopefully finishing in a top six spot to qualify for nationals in August. Practicing for the tournaments will take about a month as he peaks for the large chunk of competitive events.

In addition, Connor is looking to grab a spot available to Saskatchewan golfers in his group for this year's Canada Games in Winnipeg. He is currently in the qualifying process for the games. "It started out with 30 of us and I think only 4 people make the team," he said. "So hopefully I can grab one of those four."

This year's golf tournaments are not the only thing on the young golfer's mind as well. Tate is a grade 12 student at Kindersley Composite School, and as he maneuvers around his busy golf schedule, he has already been discussing his plans for the future.
