All registered pesticides must be regularly re-evaluated by Health Canada’s Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) to ensure that they continue to meet current health and environmental standards and continue to have value. This, under the authority of the Pest Control Products Act. Strychnine and its associated end use products were under the matter of this revision. This re-evaluation considered data and information from pesticide manufacturers, published scientific reports and other regulatory agencies.

The Government of Canada and PMRA recently released the models of the science evaluation in their evaluation piece. These figures come with the announcement that Strychnine will be de-registered by the PMRA. This will mean 2% liquid concentrate Strychnine can’t be manufactured after March 2021, sold after March 2020, and producers can’t use the product after March 2023.

The models are available here, and an article from our affiliate okotoksonline.com, on the use of Strychnine as the best measure against gophers.
