Members of the Wilkie & District Fire Department competed in the Fire Fit Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Nunavut regional competition in Regina this past weekend.

This was nothing new for Deputy Fire Chief Craig Sittler, who has been there five times now, but it was a first for the full team of Greg Brooks, Hunter Sittler, Brandon Kotzer, Matthew Schaber.

Deputy Fire Chief Sittler gives a quick background on the competition.

"The Fire Fit Competition this year was down in Regina. There are events across Canada that take place every year. Then the World Championships and the Canadian Nationals this year take place in Sarnia, Ontario. They alternate year to year between the west and the east side of the country to accommodate all the competitors."

Back to the competition, Sittler was very pleased how his teamed faired.

This included first timer Hunter Sittler, who received an award for determination and perseverance for his grueling run of 5:51.99.

Also doing well was Greg Brooks, who ran a tough run of 3:59.85, and earned a gold medal in the 45 plus division and a bye to nationals in Sarnia, Ontario.

Deputy Fire Chief Sittler meanwhile, ran a time of 2:46.26, and earned a silver medal with that time in the chief's division and will be joining Brooks in Sarnia with a wild card spot at nationals.

Sittler and BrooksDeputy Chief Sittler and Fireman Robert Brooks will be moving onto nationals in Sarnia from September 12 to 17.

As for the team competition, they got their first taste Sunday morning facing off against a Regina team running a respectable time of 2:03.62 in the seeding round. They then ran a second race against another Regina team improving to a time of 1:55.66, this however was not a good enough time to move on. Overall, the team was very pleased with their showing and already planning for next year's event.
